The oldest gallery built by man, 2,000 years ago, made by soldiers of the Roman legions, on an ancient Etruscan gallery.
You have to leave the motorway and you can find hotels, campsites, restaurants, playgrounds for children and trekking and bike trails.

Built in the year 76 after Christ by the Emperor Vespasian, the Roman emperor Honorius passed through here in 404, after the victory over the Visigoths of Alaric, to go to the triumph of Rome. Vitige in 538, in the midst of the Gothic war, fortified the pass, closed the two entrances to the gallery and placed a garrison of 400 Ostrogoths, who were then defeated by the soldiers of Belisarius, causing large boulders to fall from above. Later occupied by Totila, it was powerfully fortified, but in 553 Narsete conquered it. Between 570 and 578, the pass was taken by the Lombards who destroyed the fortifications.

In the following centuries it seems that the Via Flaminia was almost abandoned: in 1502 Lucrezia Borgia passed through it, going to Ferrara and in 1506, with difficulty, Julius II who was going to the company of Bologna. Even at the beginning of the 18th century, transit was difficult and dangerous, and only in 1776 the pass and the road were restored. Between 23 May and 12 June 1849 the soldiers of the Roman Republic, commanded by Colonel L. Pianciani, resisted the Austrian army.

In the thirties the local Forestry Guard, with excavations and construction of walls, reproduced on the slopes of Mount Pietralata, close to the gorge, the profile of Benito Mussolini, who often crossed the gorge in his movements between Rome and the north. Italy, staying in a historic local hotel [6]. The monument, which was mined and destroyed by the partisans during the war, is only partially recognizable.

During the Second World War, the Furlo experienced moments of tension, but it was not the scene of fierce clashes. The seventies were instead devastating years, especially for the landscape, ruined by the activity of the stone quarries.
